Kris Freeman National Distance Champion

Kris Freeman (Maine Winter Sports Center/USST) broke away on the last 10k lap to win Thursday’s 50 k classic mass start in 2:24:52.8, Andy Newell (SMST2/USST) was second at 2:25:46.4 and Norwegian Einar Ulsund (University of Utah) was third at 2:26:15.5.

Liz Stephen National Distance Champion

Liz Stephen (Burke Mountain Academy/USST) ruled the day at Royal Gorge in the National Distance Championship. Liz skied the 30k Classic Mass Start Race in 1:41:54.8, over a minute ahead of USST teammate and World Cup Champion Kikkan Randall (APU/USST) who finished in 1:42:57.3. Rosie Brennan (APU) finished third in 1:43:59.2 skiing through the slush in 55 degree temps.

Erik Bjornsen and Liz Stephen win SuperTour Finals Titles

Liz Stephen (Burke Mountain Academy/USST) overcame a 2:26 minute deficit in Monday’s hill-climb pursuit, for the overall SuperTour Finals title in 30:23.7. Randall (APU/USST) went off course briefly after the halfway point of the climb, but skied back to go up the correct route for second overall (31:02.0), ahead of Sadie Bjornsen (APU/USST) who was third (31:58.9).

Erik Bjornsen (APU/USST) held his lead over Kris Freeman (Maine Winter Sports Center/USST) to win the SuperTour Finals title in 25:28. Freeman was second in 25:48.5, and Mikey Sinnott (SVSEF) placed third (26:35.9) in the overall SuperTour Finals.

The white bib for the best young skier, U23, went to Erik Bjornsen who also won the yellow best overall bib along with Jessie Diggins, and the the green best sprinter bib along with Kikkan Randall. Kris Freeman and Liz Stephen won the polka-dot best climber bibs.

The NNF Cup went to the APU Nordic Ski Team.

It was a cold blustery day for the final race of the SuperTour Finals, the 6k hill climb pursuit up Sugar Bowl’s Mt Disney. Liz Stephen won the women’s hill climb, making up a 2:26 minute deficit and taking the SuperTour Finals Title after Kikkan Randall went off course. Jessie Diggins was 2nd in the climb, and Chelsea Holmes took 3rd. For the men Kris Freeman won the climb, Brian Gregg was 2nd, and Tad Elliot took 3rd.

Hill Climb Preview Day

Preview on the uphill portion of the course will ONLY be available from 7:30-8:30am. All skinny-skiers must be off the hill by 8:45am at the latest. After 9am athletes and coaches with credentials can show credentials at the admin ticket window in Village Lodge to get a free lift ticket and rentals. To get there: take the gondola, walk out of the gondola building turn left toward the mountain, turn left into Village Lodge, take your first left, and Megan Sampsel will be there issuing tickets. Tickets are good for the day…so have a good time.

The lower portion of the course is marked with RED arrows. It will be open from 8:30am-3pm. It begins in the meadow to the left of Disney Lift, and runs through the Village before going onto Royal Gorge trails. Please be aware that the portion of the course in the Village is used as a snowmobile route (not after tomorrow night), but may be rutted because of that. It will NOT be rutted for the race. Also, there are a few bare spots on course now that will be filled in Sunday night. Groomers have not spread snow over these patches to avoid unnecessary melt.

If you want to test skis: there will be no traffic allowed into the Village tomorrow, but there will be for race morning. Tomorrow, Sugar Bowl has offered snowmobile transport from West Bay Parking to the Village near the start. There will be someone stationed at the end of the parking lot (http://www.sugarbowl.com/resortmap – the lot next to Sugar Bowl Academy) running gear back and forth between 7:30am and 10am.

Newell and Randall Claim Sprint Titles

US Ski Team sprinter Andy Newell (SMS T2/USST) won the men’s classic sprint passing 2nd place finisher Pat O’Brian (CGRP) on the second to last hill. Erik Bjornsen (APU/USST) came from behind to finish 3rd.

Kikkan Randal (APU/USST) made it 3 for 3, winning the women’s classic sprints ahead of 2nd place finisher Ida Sargent (CGRP) who won the qualifier, quarter, and semifinals, and 3rd place Sadie Bjornsen (APU/USST.)

Freeman and Randall take the Classic

The sun was out for the 10/15k Classic Mass Start races on day 2 of the SuperTour Finals at Auburn Ski Club. Kriss Freeman took an early lead and added to it, winning the Men’s 15k Classic with a time of 38:31.8. Erik Bjornsen was 2nd at 39:19.1, and Andy Newell was 3rd at 39:22.3. The snow was a bit softer for the women’s 10k and Kikkan Randall claimed her 2nd win with a time of 31:40.8, followed by Sadie Bjornsen in 2nd place at 32:17.4 and Liz Stephen in 3rd place at 32:27.8.

Kikkan Randall and Erik Bjornsen Win Prologue

A rain & snow mix made for a wet start to the SuperTour Finals which opened today with the 3.3k freestyle prologue at Auburn Ski Club. Kikkan Randall crushed the competition with a time of 7:57.9. Jessie Diggins was second at 8:05.0 and Sadie Bjorsen was 3rd at 8:13.5. Erik Bjorsen won the men’s race at 7:47.0, Knute Johnsgaard was 2nd at 8:01.5, and Mark Iverson and Michael Sinnott tied for 3rd at 8:02.7.
